I reckon its a bit of a con really. People say its lighter but you lose a cog off the front and add one to the back so you don't really save any weight. Aside from that you have a much narrower gear range without the granny. I see it as another way of getting people to spend cash on replacing their whole drive chain for no reason. Great marketing though :D
 
Yeah but with a closer gear ratio it put less strain on the chain, which = less wear on the chain & cassette And shifts better. didn't know if may were mixing old with new...

So the parts last better but you lose the ability to do long climbs?

I think it's just a signpost that mountain biking nowadays is less about finding trails and just being told where to go.

More down than up. And I hate going up but it's a necessary evil.
