Yeah older headset (Pre 2007?) so older race. had to get a new one a while back myself. I think the new old one will be split, mine was.
Love the rainbow brakes.

I'm having some work done on the brakes and the nice man at Hope has found me a new race and is sending it down gratis. Apparently they don't make steel ones anymore just a few alloy ones. Interested if anyone has any ideas about how to fit it. My usual method is some plumbers pipe and a big mallet but I'm a little wary if it's alloy as the last one chipped like hell under any force when I tried to get it off my old forks.

Ah that must be it, my one is alloy and split. If split its fit by hand. Sometimes I fit races by using the top cap. Great little trick. Works too. Only recommended for cartridge bearing I suppose? Though all the force does dissipate down through the race (by seating it).

Just slot the race on as much as you can. Then assemble headset etc. and steerer all together. Set it up like you were to finalise it. Just do the top cap bolt up until it seats the race. Use a good bolt and cap and try and get the race going down parallel.

I keep meaning o buy one. It's one of those things that you don't really want to spend money on, but not having one is such a pain. I bought a headset press a few years ago and am glad I did...much better than the two pieces of wood and a hammer that issued to use! Next new headset I get, I'll buy a race installer.

You should try my method before buying a race press. I don't see any problems with it and surprised more people don't do it.
