Hope specialists - NEW QUESTION pg2

Re: Hope specialists

it sounds to me like they need rebleeding as some air has got into the system. not that I doubt your LBS but it would certainly be worth doing again, even if it's just to practise for yourself

other than that, all the other suggestions sound good. I have hope mini's and O2's and have bled them and bled over them lol. love'em to bits

Re: Hope specialists

Rebleed - how can your LBS deduce whether the oil is worn out or not? You need to rebleed Hopes every couple of years.

Seal kit will def. help.

Bleeding is dead easy on Hopes.

But before you do any of this - bed your pads in - i.e.get them filthy and brake hard, lots. It might be all you need.

Re: Hope specialists

Consider if you will what Hope actually do for the £40.

Caliper- New seals and new pistons and new pads.
Given the caliper only has seals/pistons/pads in a cnc shell then youve replaced everything so its about as good a s new(The pistons are plastic, forget wear to the bore of the caliper,it just aint going to happen ;) )

Lever assembly- New seals, new piston, new diaphragm plus all fittings bolts and circlips .Basically all the internals replaced in a cnc shell so its about as good as new(also as above the inside is alloy and the piston has a rubber seal that moves along it,aint going to wear ;) )

Then of course the professionally bleed the system with new fluid ,I think if you added up all the components in the lever and caliper then added the retail costs of fluid and pads(what are hope resin pads retail ? £15 abouts. this leaves £25 per brake for Hope to replace EVERYTHING Plus strip clean(blast through with dry air) reassemble and bleed.
Roughly worked out using lbs prices for labour and parts. it appears they do thses services for pennies,in fact its closer to them paying you to service your brakes

Im about to send a pair of monos to them .This week ill send one and in 2 weeks or so ill send the other. . Eighty quid is eighty quid but spreading it out helps :?

PS Also please note you will be doing all the work yourself ;) that will take loads of time,i mean even getting the pistons out can be a challenge and im sure some parts might be trickier to remove without the proper tool it might even be Hope make their own dooda tools to aid removal. All of which you dont have.

Re: Hope specialists

The pricing is very good. I was trying to get hope parts on trade as i thought it would be a lot cheaper. Turns it out isnt because its also actually really well priced (i.e not a huuuge markup).

Re: Hope specialists

When you consider all the part, it's a pretty good price. I didn't realise that pads are replaced as well.

Although, they are easy to work on if you do want to save a few pennies.

Re: Hope specialists

I've tried e-mailing Hope directly a few times with some questions about various things but have received no replies. Are they notorious for not replying to e-mails? I suppose I could always use the telling bone...........
Anyway, how would you Hope experts rate completely rebuilding the lever and caliper of E4/DH4 on the difficulty-o-meter? Looking at the exploded diagrams on the Hope website it looks pretty straightforward, perhaps deceptively so. Anything I specially need to be careful about. I've had a fair look via the Google and Youtoob and while I couldn't find a description of the process for my specific brakes I'd imagine the info out there for other Hope brakes would hold true for E4s?

Re: Hope specialists

I've always found then really good at responding to emails.

The DH4 and E4 brakes are really easy to work on, the lever is pretty easy because it's so easy to get at everything. It's pretty basic in its construction, allen keys, spanned and circlip pliers is all you need.

E-mail must be getting bounced off some spam filters. Never mind.

I have one seal kit complete but the replacement circlip has gone missing somewhere along the line (had the seal kit for about 10 years I'd guess) but can't imagine there'd be any problems re-using the one that comes off the lever.

Anyway cheers for the quick reply, will try to document my no doubt ham fisted rebuild efforts. Hopefully will be of use to someone down the track.
