Hope 1st gen mechanical disc brake Shimano/Mavic rear wheel

Re: Hope 1st gen mechanical disc brake Shimano/Mavic rear wh

Got me curious Rod, the first hubs they re-worked were Sakae but they re-worked the billet and the discs were a 6 bolt direct mount design - rotors were twice as thick as that - I didn't think that spider came into production until late 91/92. Tell me more about it please? Is it a pre-production version? initially they started with tandems, is there a year mark on the hub?

Re: Hope 1st gen mechanical disc brake Shimano/Mavic rear wh

Thanks for the replies, guys.
The disc is for a Bruni tandem that I helped Tom Bruni build when I worked for him in 1994. At the time I thought I would just unscrew the disc from my road wheels and screw it on my cross wheels when I wanted to do some light off-roading. The problem with screw on discs... They just screw tighter when you brake. It's stuck!
So, no pics but I'll paint a mental one for you. Take a 40 hole Campy Record high flange road hub - freewheel, of course. Cut the axle to 106mm. Run it backwards (threads on the left) and you have my road front wheel. The off-road wheel is a bullseye hub, but otherwise the same. So, I'm looking for rotors with the freewheel threads on the spider.
The rear road wheel is a 40 hole Hugi with the splined and threaded setup which accepts the splined spider with a lockring securing it. The off road rear is the 48 hole version with a screw on disc. I think we just used what was in stock!
Well, Tom died some years back (and thus no spares in the attic to rummage through) and I've got a stuck rotor spider. My young sons take turns riding with me through a local state park as well as around town, so it would be much easier just to thread a disc on and be done with it because the boys get tired of me popping off the road tire and mounting the knobbies each time.

Ahh I get it. So if Rod's threads were cut with a standard freewheel die it will most likely be the same spider - if they weren't then no luck.

Rods wheel now in my possession :). Photos up loaded to the hope disc brake timeline.

Will measure the id of the disc carrier when I get home Ken.
/edit
Rough ID without removing spider is 33.4mm

Hmm... Wow... Has almost a year gone by? How'd that happen?

Squirrel, still have this? Figure out how to unscrew the disc?

still have it - not used it yet - still looking for a rear hope mechanical caliper. On the subject though there is,a guy asking silly money on.eBay atm for a hope mechanical with original? aluminium disk.

Re: Hope 1st gen mechanical disc brake Shimano/Mavic rear wh

Yeah, one steel, one aluminum? I haven't seen an aluminum disc before, odd material for it. One off?
Calipers are same front & rear I believe. Have you had a caliper in your hands? That one has the axle & fork leg clamp mount bolted to it, but once you remove that, they're all the same, I think. Really need to totally break down the tandem and rebuild it. It's been a while.
