Home spraying - The rattle can paint job - How is best?

Any commercial place just can't compete with your time and the 1500 wet n dry paper, just need to get hold of an oven big enough for a bike frame and i'm away

Many years ago I stripped and resprayed a frame. I did it a deep metallic purple with several layers of clear laquer and the end result was really good, even if I do say so myself. However, I spent absolutley hours on it and despite looking good, the end result was very delicate and very easily marked or chipped.

Given the time required for DIY, I'd say at round the £100 mark, some of the professionals are pretty good value for money.

The only problem with rattle can spray jobs is the paint. It doesn't have a hardener in it and thus chips and scratches much easier than a pro paint job will with a two-stage epoxy paint. That hasn't stopped me from using it on some parts, like the Mag 21's on my 91 Funk, but- I have to touch them up occasionally, maybe twice a year.

If you haven't got the materials already go through the Yellow pages/Yell.com and get quotes from Powder coaters.

See what colours they are running and get it lopped in with a batch of other stuff they are doing.

Expect to pay about £30-£40 for frame and forks.

Saves so much time and effort, I had a shallow say 2mm ding and the coater just went over the area until it was flush. Took about a week to get them frame back as it was over a bank holiday but the finish polished up really well and is so durable in comparison to rattle cans.


Drop the frame off and collect in person and save a packet.

Stops you gassing yourself but doesnt help the paint finish, drops of rain, breezes & bastard little insects all plot to mess up your hard work. The best place to spray is in a ventilated spray booth with extractors...like Bobby J's and argos will use.

Oh your right, they *can* look nice, but by the time you get them there, the materials and time costs make Bob Jacksons seem like a good option, especially since despite using various etching primers, multiple layers of paint, then layers of clear coat, it still flakes like a sun burned albino.

all the items you see in the pics i painted with a rattle can in the garage,
all it takes is time,

n they have all proven them selfs the cam covers have been painted for well over a year n still look as fresh

I hang mine up in the greenhouse on a sunny day - temperature gets good and hot with the door and ventilation shut - DIY bake oven.
