Home Anodizing

Hi all

Not often I post on here but this is something I (well mainly my mate as he has somewhere to do it) have played with this. We used proper anno dye not food colouring but otherwise it is as described on that site.

A few things we found out:

1. The chemicals are AWFUL!! as is the gas given off by the reaction. The gas is also very corrosive so dont do it with anything steel or alu anywhere close.

2. The object to annodise has to be TOTALY clean and also has to have the same finish you want the finished product to have, as the anno just takes the finish of the metal.

3. Use distilled water, De-ionised is not enough (it still has impurities that can create a cloudy finish).

4. Temperature makes a huge difference to how well the dye takes, warmer is better.

5. Getting consistant results is difficult even when you have made every effort to get everything the same.

Other than that its easy :)

The pic is of my mates home made light body, this was about the 6th or 7th attempt.
