Hi, this is my first ever post on any forum, so please be forgiving! I was hoping for some help please.

I’ve inherited my father in law’s old holdsworth. It’s been seriously altered but I can’t quite pinpoint what I have. The frame number is 012885 and it’s the “0” that’s throwing me as I’m told it dates back to 1951 but there’s no mention of a zero on the frame chart for that date. I’ve found a typhoon online that looks the same but that is apparently from 1967. This one came with campag derailleurs fitted front and back, one from the early 60’s and one from the 80’s. It’s also had sturmey archer added too! So my question is - is it possibly a 1951 typhoon?! Thanks very much.

Based on that picture of the number it has a post 1976 six digit number in the correct location, they always start with a leading zero and on current predictions would be a 1978 model. As you say it looks modified, hub gears and a derailleur would be unusual for the 70's, but the center pull brakes would not. Also as there are no decals you might want to consider that Holdsworth did also build for other shops and companies. I recently found a F W Evans with a 6D Holdsworth number as this has. I see this has the markings of a Holdsworth head badge which would be possible upto the end of the 70's, I think, but modified bikes are routinely incorrectly badged.

It first glance I would say this is one of the last Equipe's, but pls do check out the frame ID points first. Pay particular attention to all lugs, as these are unlikely to have changed, and other brases on's, which may have changed. I See the Tourmallet listed as a frameset only from 1963 until the end of production in 1976. They were produced after Holdsworth took over and should carry the number from ~17000 to 24000 on current predictions. Its difficult to place this one as that number as stated is far too high. Can you provide some pictures of the number and the other frame features like the lug work etc.? Mine has the modern headset with push in bearings, another example that they would build to order as they where built within a week of each other.
For me it would be good to find that the lower hole is original the badges where on quite fine pins.
When I scaled the few internet pics the spacing seemed much bigger than the later head badge, it will be interesting to find out what is correct, look forward to your update

Contacted on eBay, a seller of a recently sold Cyclone-De-Luxe frame that had the corresponding De-Luxe headbadge, and he confirmed that rivet spacing was 64mm (vs. the 56.5mm spacing of the regular Holdsworth badge).

So, at any rate, now we know that!
