Highpath advice sought please. Just bought one in Edinburgh

cricket....what's that then......is it like the Camanachd?

Cricket involves putting a plastic cup in your sporran while some chap hurls a wee ball at you that you swat away at with a stick. If the ball knocks down the three miniature cabers standing behind you then you're oot. Oh, you'll also need a white kilt to play it, not sure what clan it's from

For the English it is kind of like hockey on a huge pitch but played with hockey sticks like golf pitching wedges. The goalie wears the traditional protective clothing of a baseball hat and trackie bottoms.

It's great.

priceless mate , I used to play 'D' with the Edinburgh Stingers ice hockey team and there is no way I'd play shinty, no way!

Getting a great hit on the ball with a caman (sp) is a great feeling. It goes for bloody miles.

Still, we'll be having a wee sesh on the 11.45 from Rannoch to Mallaig and back again on Tuesday to make up for it.

Here's a close up of some Wrath-Sharman made adjustable handlebars taken in about 1986. It is important with this design that there isn't any play in the pivot, as this can cause metal fatigue which can eventually lead to failure. Mine cracked near the map holder holes. Even though they were reinforced, they still acted as stress raisers.

The levers are the original Shimano Deore XT.
The non-indexed changers look like Suntours? These were lighter than the Deore XT changers but more prone to cable breakages due to their much smaller diameter.

The grips are as (Geoff says) are DWS' favorite mushroom type. Soon after this DWS switched to using Mushroom type grips that came as long tubes that could be cut to size. I think that they were intended for use instead of bar tape on drop handle bars. DWS may still have some?

I know it was a jammy find, I just hope that I haven't used up my 'Ferrari in an old highland steading' card!

The Highpath find still makes me grin like a mentalist, it's a funny old world.

Questions:

Anyone got recommendations for front and rear mechs for my Highpath?

I'm thinking Suntour front for the Suntour MicroDrive crankset and Shimano rear for the Shimano Megarange cassette.

Happy to be shot down here as long as I get it right guys.

Hi Pete,

A Highpath's components were often chosen by the prospective owner, so I can't say for certain what would have been fitted to this bike. I can however tell you the components that DWS would have recommended at this time.

1/ Indexed gears were new, unproven and so not trusted to be reliable.

2/ Shimano components had been proven to be more reliable and so were favored over other makes.

3/ Whilst other bikes used long arm derailleurs DWS preferred to us short arm derailleurs because his Highpath' microdrive transmissions did not require a long chain. (My Highpath is an exception to this rule in that I wanted to avoid specialist components, that may not be easily replaceable if they failed whilst touring).

4/In an article in a March 1986 copy of Bicycle Action magazine, DWS specifies equipment as "Custom+ XC fr. Deore c.set. Cyclone".
