High standards? 137mm bcd ...

I have read a lot of comments lately on the development of so many new standards in cycling. And when I was contemplating building a Surly Midnight Special recently, I was put off by the amount of standards that demand other standards that demand other standards. I gave up, although the itch hasn't gone yet.

But, working on my 1978 Gazelle Semi Race, I found the SR crankset takes 137 bcd chainrings. Mmmmm, I haven't found anything suitable yet. Are we just begrudging the new and forgetting the past was not that different?

What ring do you want?

The later versions of that bike came with the "RG" version of the Apex-5, with a 118 BCD. Which is almost as rare as 137 (you sure it's not 144, BTW?).

These allow for a more useful gear range. The 36T rings are pretty much unobtanium, but 40T rings can be found.

I believe I have a spare set with the original 52/42 rings if you're interested.

I am interested.

That Apex crank does give good range, but has the same problem of no chainrings being available, of course. It is definitely not 144.
