Hi, first post and need some Hope hub advice

Shackster

Retro Newbie
First of all, was well pleased when I discovered this website as I thought all MTBs had to have 300mm of travel and disc brakes these days ;)

Anyway, I'm coming back to mtb'ing in a big way this year after many years inactivity, the plus side of which is that my bike is still in pretty much mint condition...

The Spec:
Raleigh/Dyna-Tech Torus FS Ti frame
Pace RC35 (from 1994 I think) & handlebar
Hope Hubs
Royce Ti BB
X-lite seatpost
Gripshift, XT mechs, Gore Tex cables (the best purchase EVER, still smooth after 17 years!!), Middleburn crankset, Pace chainrings

All weighing in at 20.5 pounds (9.5 kg). What is it with all these heavy modern bikes? And I mean £2K hardtails as well?? (this cost me well over that all told).

My bike evolved from a Marin Bear Valley SE from 1993 (bought with a student loan  !); I upgraded all the parts over the first few months I was working, then went to an Indian Fire Trail frame, which was way too stiff for me so I quickly went for the cheapest Ti frame I could get my hands on, still very nice though. It's remained pretty much as it was since the late nineties, although it had an update to V-brakes a few years ago, and a replacement rim at some point. Oh and some new grips this weekend to replace the withered John Tomac ones!

Going over it this weekend I noticed that the rear hub bearing isn't quite as smooth as it should be - there's no play, but it's ever so slightly rough. I did replace the bearings about 6 months after I got the wheels (1994 ish) mainly because I was endlessly fiddling at that time, but they've been in there since then - nearly 17 years!! They'll be OK for a while but I'm doing the British Heart Foundation South Downs Way 100-miler in June, so want to get it in tip-top condition for that (it'll be in better nick than me, in all probability  ).

Apart from shamelessly showing off my bike, I would like to know what bearings I need for the hubs? I couldn't find definitive advice and the hope website doesn't seem particularly helpful.

Thanks in advance!

Can't really help you except to take out - measure or take to any bearing place.

However, lovely looking bike, upgraded very nicely and as an MT5 owner really appreciate the weight of these.

Iirc the rear hub you have there (ti glide) should be using 6001 bearings.. This is very easy to check by removing the wheel and pulling the l/h spacer off the axle thus revealing the non drive side bearing.. It may be a bit grotty under there after all those years but a quick wipe over with a rag and you should be able to read the bearing number off the seal :) ..
I'm pretty certain they'll be 6001's but they may be 6000's..

welcome! Great bike, and even better that you got the mtb bug again

Sithlord replaced the bearings in my hope Ti hubs, can't remember what numbers etc for them though, they are easy and cheap to buy.
