But Bear Valley SE shared the frame of the Eldridge and Pine Mountain. Puzzling.

Not Puzzling at all, I'm a numpty! Just had another look in better light. What I thought was a 7 is a 4 that is slightly incomplete, so it is and Eldridge frame.

My 95 17.5” BV SE shows F45BA so that would figure..

Re:

"I rephrase to not sound so hopeless"

C13400096 appears to be the frame number on my Marin which I thought was an 93/94 Indian Fire Trail??

I need to get some new frame stickers and want to make sure I get the right ones.

Can anyone please enlighten me on exactly what I've got?

Hi all,
I am recording serial numbers of pre-90s Marin Mountain Bikes, and the more I can get with your help the stronger a code can be deciphered. So far I'm barely starting, but is looking so far as:

A7A(2nd "A" perhaps is the bike model)nnnnn (8-characters) for early 1987
AYYmmnnnnn (10-characters) for rest of 1987 and 1988
MYmmnnnnn (9-character) for 1989

Legend:
A and M in first position is fabricator with A probably being Craig Smith or Araya in Japan, but I really these are just guesses. M= Marvel?
Y- Year
m-month
n-bike number

I am also posting pictures of early bikes, hoping to get some info about them

Cheers!

An early '87 without serial info that I found online. This yellow bike is similar to a Fisher from 1989, the Montare, but the seat tube reinforcement appeared as early as 1986 in the Ritchey Ascent.

The groupset on this is the Shimano Deore (MT60) of 1987

Another early 87 without serial with the same seat tube reinforcement but with Deore XT, also debuting in 1987

A close up of the seat tube reinforcement of the above and of a early '87 Marin (with A7A serial), please disregard these three have Muir Woods on their name file. I'm inclined to believe these may be all a high end model for that year, but I'm uncertain due the lack of serials on the yellow and blue bikes or an 1987 catalog to know which models were offered that year, the red, currently on sale online differs by a chrome Marin decal.

Hello,

Looking for some help identifying a Marin frame. I read the guide to the serial numbers, but it still really remains a mystery to me as the frame attributes do not fit to the appropriate year and model. To me it looks like a Team Issue, but I could be wrong.

The SN is:
C36GAC003
Also, there is a 13-17 on the bottom bracket.

C = California? China?
3 = Pine Mountain? The frame is chrome, so unless this was done afterwards it wouldn't make sense.
6 = 1986, which seems too early, but 1996 seems too late??

Thank in advance and sorry, lots of pics.

-Ryan

Just guessing here Rocky Ridge 1996, I just took a quick look at the 1996 online catalog

Re:

Thanks for the reply, Santuri32!

I scoured the 96 catalog as well. The only thing is that the 96 Rocky Ridge appears to be Aluminum, while mine is ChroMoly.

On page 4, the dropout looks super similar to the one in the picture next to the welding torch.

So maybe 93-94 timeframe? Is it possible the second number or the last number could be the year, making it a 93?
