Help with a replacement Bottom Bracket..

My first post and I need help with replacing a bottom bracket.

I am in the process of resurrecting my 1991 Giant Escaper and the original Tioga MTB-SK BB is shot, worn bearings and badly pitted axle.

For the time being I have fitted cheapo cups and a 7R axle, the original Tioga
3R axle is too short for cups due to the original bearing races used. The 7R axle fits but it puts the chainset out too far and the mech won't move far enough to the outer chainring.

What would bet the best solution?

Thanks for the reply.

The front mech is at the limit of it's travel, I'm not sure if a 5R axle will help...
might be worth a try.
