HELP; removing stuck crank

Dirt Disciple
need some advice on how to remove a crank, without using a crank extractor tool.

for the first time in 8 years i want to get the cranks off my pub bike, and the threads onto which i would normally screw a crank extractor are knackered.

any bodging advice? both destructive and non destructive advice welcome but i will only get the blowtorch out as a last resort.

many thanks

james

A large hammer and a thick flat bladed screwdriver betwixt BB cup and pedal arm or:

If you are feeling brave - undo the crank bolt and ride the bike without it.

I had to remove a totally stuck set once....

I ended up using a hacksaw to cut a slot into it (dremel might be better), insert flat blade chisel or strong screwdriver into the slot and use it to drive the slot open and crack the material through to the axle. It worked fine and the BB survived to fight more days.

If its the crank you want to save, cut through the BB axel and use a hydraulic press to get the remaining bit out of the crank arm.

If its the drive side you will need to remove, or move the chainrings out of the way and take extra care.

BB axels are hard to cut through as they are usually case hardened, but it is do-able.

Just done this on a set myself.

If its the BB you want to save go with cutting into the arm as previously suggested.
