Retro Newbie
Ok just bought a really plush 2000 stuntjumper nt that old i know but old enough! Does any one know how or evn if i can upgrade rear swinging section of the frame or iftheres anyway to fit disk brakes to the original....if nt is anyone interested in a v clean stuntjumper? Aaarrrrggghh!

Ok thanks for the constructive help ...no keyboards nt broken or twelve on a tablet ...that ok by you...n thought a 2000 wouldn't be too old for disks...its my first bike in 16 years so not up to date sorry for my noobness didn't think i'd offend you

I wouldn't know what year disc's came out

You could get a welder to weld some disc tabs on. Like Roberts? Or the other British frame builders.

I think you have options before welding. A2Z do a disc adapter that you can fit without welding, though you have to have the right drop outs. Specialised also did their own adapter that fitted between the drop out and the v brake boss. Try googling brake therapy as well, as they did a similar thing. Failing that you could get one welded if the rear is steel, not so sure how easy it is for aluminium though due to heat treating etc.

If you go down the disc route from v brakes (as I dis once), you'll need at minimum new wheels a d disc brakes, possibly shifters too if you have sti lever/shifter combos. Cable routing may also need to be looked at, either drilling out existing cable guides, or getting adapters depending on your preference. I assume your forks have disc tabs, otherwise they'll need to be replaced too.

All in all not cheap, and the benefits are really marginal in my view.

Rob, if you are going to type like that, you are going to get it ripped out of you constantly on this site - and rightly so in my opinion

Srt it out! :D

I'd go along with that. I've got a bike with V-brakes and one with discs and there's not much in it in terms of stopping power.

Having said that, my disc brakes are fairly lowly Avid Juicy 3 with 160mm rotors, maybe the top end stuff with bigger rotors are much more powerful, I couldn't say, I've never tried them.

2000 is just slightly too old for discs on an xc bike. Specialized introduced discs on the 2001 Enduro FSR, which had longer travel, but they didn't offer a disc version of the Stumpjumper FSR until 2002.

Hi and welcome,my experiences with disks have been very mixed, better in the wet but only if you use top notch kit ,,,I run Magura HS33 hydraulic rim brakes on a couple of my bikes. They are superb and can be had at a very good price secondhand,no need to modify bike and mega powerful and very good "feel".
Mark.
