Help please - Steel GT serial numbers

I've a 1991 Talera. White/Gray Web paint scheme. On the BB shell it has the serial number 741. Shortest serial number I've ever seen. Can't see any others but it's dark in the carport of destiny right now and the frame is in a box. I can have another look if you think there'd be numbers anywhere else.

Usually in 1991 they would have had numbers stamped both sides of the bottom bracket shell. That side sounds like the serial number, so I would expect the other side to have numbers stamped on two lines, the first being a 5 character T90XX or T91XX and the second being A#.

Or the A# could be on the same side as the serial, I forget without checking.

Actually, no. As a Talera, I would expect it to have a 4 character code on the other side, either H0## or H1## ....... because I think the lower range models were already made in Taiwan rather than Japan. This is why I need more data though!

Cool :)

What does the SY in the serial number mean?

The S refers to another factory that produced the frames after Hodaka, probably another in Taiwan, I guess but I don't know the name. I'm not sure about the Y, as that was there 1995 and 1996 but not after that.

As this thread helped me with a quest, I'll share the story here :)

Long story short, It's been a long time since I was looking for the 1995 GT Outpost color names and today I finally found it.

I love this bike! In addition to having the most beautiful color I've ever seen, even after almost 30 years its rigidity still impresses me and others, the feeling is like riding on a train track. It's curious considering the Outpost was the second cheapest model.

Bikepedia is wrong about the color because I have a red one and red is not mention there: https://www.bikepedia.com/Quickbike/BikeSpecs.aspx?item=32278

Wayback Machine only goes back to 1996 https://web.archive.org/web/19961105164247/http://gtbicycles.com/catalog/mountain/outpost.html, the reason is because the domain was registered in 1995-05-03 https://who.is/whois/gtbicycles.com, that was close.

Here https://www.retrobike.co.uk/gallery2/v/Manufacturer+Archive/GT/Catalogues/ the 1995 catalog is not the complete one and don't mention colors. I think someone mentioned that never saw the 1995 complete catalog in this thread.

This was the only 1995 Outpost Red that I found on Internet:

Finally, today I found the 1995 catalog in German on this forum https://www.retrobike.co.uk/threads...elist-catalogs-not-yet-in-the-archive.447988/

The name of the colors this year were: Candy Evergreen and Candy Red \o/

The bike is almost all original, only what broke was changed.

Seriously? The Outpost was a seat tube cromoly hi-tensile steel tube frame. 10's of thousands were sold globally. Depending upon the year they sold new for 269-299. If the frame is the "heart of the bike" and you really want to build something up, why wouldn't you start with a nicer frame? These are not light frames.
