Help please seatpost stuck in the frame, any ideas?

Ive just bought this Trek 1000 off of Ebay, the only problem with the bike is that the seatpost has snapped off, do any of you chaps out there have any ideas on how to get the little blighter out, without destroying the frame eeeeek

If it is then your only choice might be using a long hacksaw blade and cutting from in to out. Long job but works.

Steel frame and alu post then caustic soda. Lots of threads on that. Did it myself on kili e stay in my signature.

Id check that your frame hasn't been prised apart much either. Not an issue on steel but might lead to a crack on an aluminium frame.

Why do people do that!!?? The complete seatpost in a vice, and pipe freeze applied locally, left a minute, and the frame wiggled has a great success rate.

Now it's a reet pig to get out.

Caustic is out of the equation so, it's a hacksaw/drill out job.

It seems somebody has beaten it around to try get it out. The problem with hacksaw is that the slithers of post you effectively create are still fused/oxidised to the frame, so go easy tapping them out, too much boshing may stress the local welded joints.

For me, if there is >3" of alu post in there, hacksaw may work, 4"+ and i would approach a metal fabrication workshop to have it drilled out.

Might be a silly idea, but depending on how much post is still in there and depending on the diameter of the seatpost itself, could you not neaten it up (ie. file it flush with the top of the seat tube) and use a thinner seatpost which would slide down inside the stuck one?

In that case, ignore my previous post as that seatpost is well and truly "off round" my friend!

Try drilling a hole in the seat post at the base of the slot where the seat tube clamp normally rests, towards the back of the bike. then use a small phillips screw driver and insert it into the drilled hole. tap the underside of the screw driver with a hammer until the seapost wiggles free.

if the seat stays are too close to tap w a hammer, use some steel wire and fish it through the drilled hole. twist or clamp the ends of the of the wire tobgether. then hang the frame upside down and either pull on the wire or fix a steel pipe or bar to the wire and tap it w a hammer until the post wiggles free.


maybe this works, maybe not.. could be worth a shot... good luck


side note, glad my junk is nowhere near that mangled mess of a seatpost

Adjustable hand reamer will get it out but take some time, done it this way myself.
