Hello all.

Just tried to fit this non-drive XT M739 crank arm and as I tightened the self extracting bolt I managed to round it off (it was a bit rounded anyway  ) . Got the thing off again with lots of cursing and brute force !

My question is, how do I remove the whole bolt from the crank arm in order to fit a new one ? Is there a knack or is a special tool required ? Or am I missing the bleeding obvious !

Cheers all, Steve.

I've used an old bent over spoke as an impromtu peg spanner afore.......though if it's really tight in the threads, ye might have no joy

i made a tool by drilling 2 holes in a piece of flat steel that matched 2 opposite  holes in the crank bolt, tapped them and fitted 2 3mm bolts that fitted the holes in the self extracting bolt then i was able to wind it out long winded but it works

the correct tool is the "tl fc20" from shimano, also called a peg spanner, one end is for holding the back of chainring bolts and the other is for caps like yours.

Thanks for the replies chaps. I may invest in one of those tools because it's just taken a lot of huffing and puffing (& effing) to get it out. Had to drill out the thing at work  It was a real sod to move.
Now I need some new self extracting bolts !
Cheers, Steve.
