I just picked up an all original Trek Y5, needs a good clean but the forks need a repaint.

I have taken the elastomers out of the Spyders and they are in surprisingly good condition, looks like they may of even been replaced.

My problem is trying to remove the fork legs from the Stanchions. The 6mm allen bolt at the bottom of the stanchion just seems to click and doesnt undo.

Is there a knack to doing these?

Anybody successfully dismantled a pair?

thanks

Just taken a 1999 Manitou Spyder R apart @jimwise68 and no apparent knack to it. Used a Bondhus 16468 6mm hex key to get at the bolts and they undid with very little effort.

Like you, the insides were in remarkably good condition however the forks could benefit from a new set of seals.

Any ideas on where to get them? The stanchions are 28.6mm.

Cheers, Richard

With the rockshox you loosen the bolts at the bottom of the lowers about 3mm then tap them with a mallet. After that you remove the bolts and can remove the lowers.
