Actually, the previous owner did this. Basically, what you see there is brake stud posts, screwed into brake stud posts. NO IDEA why he had it like this, I can only think that there was a suspension fork on the bike originally, and when he swapped it out for the rigid, the studs came out with the cantis and he had no knowledge that this wasn't right, so he screwed them right into the studs on the GT and kept going with it like that. I mean, they did function, but look quite crazy.

As above /\ if you have a spare knackered top cap put that in the top of the fork to stop the wood being beaten into the fork. The larger the hammer the better!

With the help of my trusty dremel tool, the headset was off in a minute and a half. The fork, only has a small nick in it, not really noticeable, though I've been told it's not worth much anyhow.

When I had this problem I just poured boiling water onto the spaces.. the aluminum expanded and a quick whack with a hammer removed the spacers..
