Help identifying kona frame

It gets weirder!

So it looks as though there are three variations of the '94 Explosif around: the "normal" version with a ribbed Tange Ultimate Ultrastrong downtube and smooth Ultralight toptube, another variation with a smooth Ultralight toptube and a smooth (presumably Ultralight) downtube, and a third version with tapered Prestige Concept top- and downtube.

I assume that's the original paint on yours ...

I assume the paint is original. It certainly looks it and it has age related cable/heel rub etc. I knew it was a bit weird when the frame turned up on ebay, but as I've wanted one forever and they seem to have made about 4 16" 94 Explosifs judging by how often you see them for sale! I had to buy it
Anyway, back to the OP, does your frame have the tapered top and downtube? It's quite a subtle taper to the downtube, more pronounced for the toptube.

The toptube is clearly slimmer than the downtube. That rules out the Kilauea, so I guess it's one of the '94 Explosifs after all.

There appear to be ridges visible behind the "KONA" downtube transfer in the full-size version of this picture:

Is that just the light? If the "valleys" of the downtube are filled with paint, that might account for some of the extra weight ...

It's just the light

In that case I reckon you've got a smooth '94 Explosif. Congratulations!

I wonder if the original decals are still there under all that yellow paint ...
