Help ID’ing this bike

Retro Newbie
Hello out there!

I’m really interested in picking up this bike as it’s going for a good price locally.

I’m just struggling to find any info on it. The seller reckons it’s an old Avanti illusion but I’m not so sure the seat collar or the lugs don’t match the period of the illusion.

Has anyone seen the “a pro” on the dropouts before?

The wishbone seat stays seem like old Trek but can’t find a retro 700c Trek with them.

It has clearance for wide tires so I believe it’s an retro hybrid (cross) bike of some kind.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A-Pro are a big Taiwanese contract bike maker - they made for Marin and Orange amongst others.
Some of the details (canti stop) are identical to Orange P7 MTBs.

It may well be a generic 'white label' frame sold to bike shops. With the double eyelets on the rear dropouts it looks more like a tourer frame, and as you say Trek used to do some nice tourers.

This bike is an Avanti Illusion. Early 90s 700c cromoly touring. Original groupset was Shimano 400CX.
Beautiful bike.
