Hello and good evening!

Retro Newbie
Hello!

I'm luke, from southend in Essex UK. Haven't done much reading on this site yet so will catch up with it all slowly.

Been a cyclist for years now, various different styles mainly bmx a few years back.

Im now venturing into the road/fixie route.

Tomorrow I'm picking up a nice looking circa 1978 dawes for a grand sum of £20.
Looking foward to a nice project, will be taking loads of pictures and notes and hopefully doing a detailed post once I have got it sorted doing it on the cheap.

First question for now is where can I look to find what model the dawes is and any form of details on the bike it once was.

Thanks!

Re:

Welcome.

Good price for the basis of a project.

Get it home and get some detailed pictures of it and if possibly find a frame number and the usual detectives will get to work.

If the badge on the head tube is small, oval and stick on, then I would venture it is from the 1990's, as that is the style of badge that was installed on the Dawes MTB's at that time.

It does look like it has a stuck on badge like you have described, I don't really know any details of it, but I will be sure to let you all know tomorrow!

So looking forward to this.

General rule when doing vintage fixie, sticking with original paint or respraying? Or just personal choice?

Re:

If it is something old / rare or with something special by way of paint, then generally people try to rescue / preserve what's there.

Otherwise, suit yourself.

One tip; if you are going to build it up as a single speed, don't cut anything off... drop outs, braze ons etc, as it will be expensive / uneconomical to reverse that decision in a year or five's time.
