Helicomatics Block Removal "Help-Advice needed Please&q

Hi "I could really do with some advice on how to get a Helicomatic block off a wheel without the removal tool". The wheel is a freebie I want to ship out but it lost a spoke on the Drive side, so the blocks gotta come off to fix it.

Any tips most welcome, thanks, yours Laz.

Hi Laz,
I can send you the tool tomorrow morning if the wheel can wait a couple of days. Never taken one off, so can't give advice on doing it without the tool. I suppose I must have had one at some point though...

Helicomatic Block removal

Looking towards future needs for your mate.. there is a Maillard helicomatic block removal tool on French ebay at the moment - 12 euros on a Buy-It-Now basis.

Also there are sevral blocks and spare hubs on the same site..they come up on a regular basis.

No money Laz... It is just a flimsy piece of metal that will go for the price of a stamp. To be honest, I've never understood how a tool so flimsy can get a lock ring off; just don't take a sledge hammer to it! Got address and will send asap.

Cheers Nick "I owe you 1 buddy" As for the sledgehammer, I only use them on naughty Nuovo Tipo rear hubs that wont let the block off. Thanks again buddy, I'll ship it right back when I'm done My best to you, yours Laz.

I used to own a Raleigh Quasar with a Helicomatic rear hub; memory is getting a bit cloudy but the lockring I think stands proud of the freewheel, so if you can't get hold of your requisite tool quickly enough (I remember it well - doubled up as a spoke key & bottle opener [1]!!), very gentle work with Mole grips may do the job.

[1] Dunno why. Presumably for those once-in-a-blue-moon occasions when you may need to change a rear wheel spoke whilst having a Worthington White Shield on the go.

^^ Once in a blue moon? Used to happen to me all the time, usually after I'd ridden into the ditch again riding between pubs. My grandma told me never to go on cycling pub crawls without a spoke key, freewheel remover and bottle opener. Maillard clearly knew this too.
