Headset size

Hello all - "Project Marin" is nearly complete, but I wonder if anyone can tell me what size headset a 1990/91 pine mountain with rigid Marin forks would take - I found a brand new shimano 105 headset in my bike bits drawer the other day so I'm hoping that will fit..but I doubt it.

Have been looking for the last hour or so on chainreaction/ebay etc for a compatible headset but have found nothing so far in 1 1/8 size that a quill stem will fit?

In order to be certain, why don't you take the stem out and either see what marking it has or measure it if none?

IIRC is if I remember correctly AFAIAA!

you need a threaded 1 1/8" headset. although its "oldtech" its still quite common/nothing special. take a look a this ebay listing

you might need to consider the steerer length when choosing the headset btw.

p.s.: you know the difference between a threaded and an ahead headset?

Actually I have an even dumber question - I'm assuming that the difference between a 1" and a 1 1/8" is simply the diameter of the "hole" in the middle of the headset, rather than the height of any of the components - because I just tried an old shimano 105 headset I had lying around and it threaded onto the forks perfectly - maybe it's an older marin than I thought?

sounds like you have a 1" fork (25.4mm outer diameter, 22.2mm inner). if it is the fork that came with the frame the head set should fit.

to find out if the stack height of the head set is fine just measure the head tube length of the frame and the steerer tube length of the fork from the bottom of the lower bearing seat to the top of the tube. the difference is the stack height you will need. the stack height of the head set is crown race, lower cup, upper cup, adjuster nut, washer and lock nut stacked onto each other MINUS the cup skirts, ie. the part of the cups that will be pressed into the frame. usually the stack height is between 30 and 40mm. if the stack height is too short you can use spacers between adjuster and lock nut. if it is too much it wont work.
