Knocking a bike together for a mates son, frame came with an integrated caged headset for 1 1/8 straight steerer.
I was going to change the forks but going to stick with them now as it will be a faff to change the front hub for a through axle and so looking at my options.
The headset on there isn't the best and I think the cups are a bit notchy so will need replacing.
Assume I can remove them (I have the tools), but as he's tall, probably want to retain the semi-integrated headset style so the forks still fit and have room for some spacers below the stem.
Budget is minimal as I'm already working to a budget for him that I've blown, but happy enough to suck up the loss as he'll have a nicer bike to enjoy.
Anyone got any recommendations on a half decent, but budget headset that will fit the bill.
Annoyingly I don't have one kicking around, only full integrated or external cup.
A thought did occur, would a fully integrated bearing set fit the semi integrated cups that were designed for caged bearings? I'd think not, but thought I'd ask that question too.
