Headset issues on 1994 Specialized Stumpjumper

What size of a headset do I need for a 1994 Specialized Stump Jumper and whats the setup?

I installed the headset caps on the frame itself, but after that I think I messed up as the fork moves abit with front brake applied.
After some youtubing, I realize I need a press fit cap on the steerer tube of the fork itself, then the bottom bearing.
Next the top, I believe I have the configuration all wrong. This is the problem I have when installing used parts off other bikes.
I am trying to install a front Judy fork from a Specialized Rockhopper from 2008, onto the 1994 Stumpjumper.
From what I can gather the steerer tubes are both the same diameter, from the 2008 Specialzed Archives the Rockhopper is 1-1/8"

I bought the 1994 frame for $20 because I needed a steel cro mo frame. The seller gave me an uninstalled front fork with a headset in a bag, that looks like it came with the frame judging by these pictures

This looks exactly like my frame and the fork that came with it.

I installed used Shimano 9 speed shifters, Shimano 9 spd rear derailleur, 9 speed cassette, handlebars, stem.

Found out my BB is a 73x (107-113), want to use either Octalink or Taper, which ever I can find cheaper.

Perhaps another issue is, I think the 08 RH fork gives the 94 SJ wrong frame angles.

There's a thread here that includes a link to a "how to" page. viewtopic.php?t=221325

Yes - there is a press fit race that goes over the steerer tube. It provides a surface for the lower bearing to run on. It is called the crown race. You'll need that. If it is missing you'll need one that matches the lower bearing.

Maybe post some pics of what you have. There are lots of experts on here (I'm not one) that will be able to help re headset installation. Good luck with it.

Yes, ok thanks jonthefish. I am brand new to the forums, so I am glad I found this place. I usually go to MTBR forums.

Thats what I thought, a race on the fork to hold the bearings in is what I was missing. I thought, and it looks like to me, the crown was fixed and apart of the fork. Guess its not, I will read the link you gave me, thanks.

I will post some pictures later on tonight.

In the meantime, I just purchased a bunch of stuff including the headset, so I am hoping the steerer tube race is included, the picture of the headset did not show it.
I am building 2 bikes, one 1994 Specialized Stumjumper from used 2005'ish bikes, and a Department Store steel framed ebike that was sold mid 2000's. I burnt out the old 300W geared motor fairly quickly. It was loud. Now I have a silent but heavy MXUS 3000w V2 direct drive 3kw-6kw motor with upgraded phase wires. Lyen 18fet 65A programmable controller, had 4S 5Ah RC Lipo from HobbyKing until 4 blew up after a ride and I chucked all 20 of them. Now I am going with a123 LiFePO4 and 18650, with high amperage charging. Probably MeanWell 10A range. I know this is an old school bike forum, specs are probably over lots of peoples head. I am getting old, so I need the assist. Some run 60mph/100kph on their bikes, I use mine for hill climbing, 10% to about 30% grades.

Back to classic bicycles. I looked at the frame of my SJ last night, with the 08 RH Judy fork on the 94 SJ, the handlebars move sideways when its lined up straight and held by seat. Looking at the old front suspension fork and the new one, there is a height difference. Its not too much of a concern for me, I just want to get it ridable and will find a proper front suspension fork later.

I will post pictures of both bikes, I doubt theres much interest in my ebike.
