Hi All

I am giving the headset on my old Kona Lava Dome a clean up before making the bike up. I was jsu wondering, though, is it possible to replace the old bearings with sealed cartridge bearings or can I get some new cup and cone type? Its an old Kona Impact headset.

Cheers All

The best is to simply buy some replacement balls from a bearing supplier. They tend to be way better than loose balls from a bike shop. Loose balls are better than the caged ones as there are more balls to take the load.

Add plenty of grease.

As winter is approaching, one trick is to fit about an inch of inner tube around the lower cup, this is then pulled over the race when finished and acts as a nice boot keeping it all muck- and water-free all winter.
