Headset. Chris King or Hope

Had my Hope for a few years now. Never any problems. British made. What else could you ask for.

Never used a king

King for bling but my engineering head gets all upset about the fact that there is no actual proper interface to the steerer on the top cap, just a 'tight' fit and a rubber o ring.

no matter how you tension the top cap onto the bearing race there is no proper metal on metal hold like you get with the split race/compression ring of other headset so there is always the potential for (admittedly microscopic) play at the top cup...which is why you often see marks on the steerers of forks that have lived in a king headset for years.

but, having said all that, I do still have a couple of King headsets in use, and can't fault them practically, it's just that niggle that it's not technically right...

The hope Headsets I have have been just as reliable, and replacing bearings has never been an issue, in 10 years of running kings, I have never even had to grease one, and in 6 years of Hope haven't had to grease or replace either.

2 kings in use for 10yrs on various frames. Plus a couple of others that have been about for the past year or so Otherwise i use the cheapest headsets for budget builds.

Hope would be ok though

Currently I have 9 Kings...one is 11 years old. I'd never use anything else.

I have both and both are good. It depends on how detailed you want to get on your build and what look you are after. If you are thinking Hope, then it's what you should go for - If you have a Moots of DeKerf then a King is all that will do. However, if we are talking Pace or Orange - Hope every day of the week. Clear as mud!
