Headset. Chris King or Hope

Why do you have to put a King headset on a Moots or Dekerf?

I detect a lot of brand snobbery going on with King stuff

And what will King or Hope do that Cane Creek can't? I've never had less than good experience of Cane Creek headsets (S2, S3, S8 ) over the years.

Well coming from BMX I've realized how good FSA headsets are as I've hardly broken any!

Whatever floats people's boats but personally I'd never spend £100 on a headset

It's not snobbery, most decent headsets do the job regardless of brand. Its the style and look as much as anything thats just 'adequately suitable' Thats the reason we all build bespoke bikes not just settle for what you can buy, ready built, off the shelf. Its about the art as well as the function and certain things go together; like mid 90s Orange frames and Pace forks - they just go together like strawberries and cream  Anyway, my favorite headset is a Ritchey WCS - can't explain why, it works just as well as my King and Hope, I just like it!

I can see your point, everyone has their favourite brands...I've always been a sucker for Syncros stuff on Kona & RM bikes

I've never really 'got' king stuff but I know there are a lot of folk in MTB who will buy a King headset without having a clue what else is out there just because of the name. I suppose that's just MTB though and if it keeps the industry afloat then that's all good :D

im actually a big fan of both. hopes first attempts were a bit flawed, but the bulk of thier offerings, especially the more recent ones are fantastic. i just serviced a modern hope last night for a friend and it shows no signs of wear or fatigue after 18 months of use on a dh bike. i like also the way that because the bearings are easily removable from the cups that time is saved servicing. it took me roughly 25mins from start to finish. king headsets are a pain to service properly, cups out of the frame etc. makes it an hours job to service.

i dont think that there is a performance difference between the two, certainly i cannot feel any difference but i can see the positives of using a hope with long travel forks.

oh, and iv just realised that all of my u.k. designed/made bikes have hope, and my u.s. made bikes have king. purely by accident.
