HC and IG compatability

Hi,

I just replaced the cassette and chain on my '94 Orange P7 and could only find a HG 8 speed cassette. I brought the compatible chain and then noticed when fitting it that the front STX RC crankset is marked IG compatible only. Hence the chain slips and the bike is unrideable

Can anyone recommend a chain which is compatible with HG and IG.

Any advise appreciated

The chain pitch is identical and frankly I've never noticed a difference with HG and IG cassettes. Edit: IG cassettes use thicker teeth, and I guess so do the chainsets. This matters with HG chains, but not SRAM or KMC. Shimano chains also seem to last less well. I've mixed an matched over the years but avoid Shimano chains.

There are a few chainsets where the chain slips between the rings, but it tends to be very old stuff.

It could be that the chainrings have worn. I had the same issue although the teeth were still long, the profile between the teeth had worn and widened. Because the old chain had stretched as the chainrings had worn, it wasn't too bad, but the new chain just kept slipping under power.

Buy a chain wear gauge, they are only a few quid, check your chain regularly and change when needed, this will stop cassette and chainrings wearing too much.
