Has anyone serviced their Judy XC Forks?

I have some of the above gold sort of colour forks and have just had a look at the elastomer stacks. Is it bad when a sort of crumbly powdery stuff come out with them? I have some red springs to put back in and am off to buy some oil. Bad news is I think I have the plastic cartridge that the Angry Asian warns about. As I don't suppose I will be able to find one of the replacements, has anyone any tips about reloading the plastic one?
 
I dont think you can service the cartridge on the Judys , replace the all unit with anotherone . englund ?
 
According to Rock Shox "The Judy damper cartridge is designed to be fully servicable and tuneable", full instructions are to be found here:

The truth of that statement lies in the availability of spares, an o-ring is an o-ring but if the cartridge needs much more than new oil it may be finished :(

If you find a stash of any sort of NOS replacements, let me know as i'll take one as a spare!
 
Thanks people. Tallpaul, I have had a quick trawl of the internet and not found anything. I'm off to get some oil and then I will have a go with the plastic thing. No doubt it will end up down the garden!
 
What I've learned so far is that it depends which year you're talking about, as they differ, Englund total air are no longer made - nor readily available apparently. Ditto elastomers. Tim Flooks no longer services pre-99 forks, owing to lack of spares. Elastomers need Judy Butter or equivalent teflon-based grease, not oil, and not on any account lithium-based grease.

You can buy stuff off this guy at ludicrous cost, in the sense of being more than the fork is worth, but he hasn't yet replied to my enquiry.

Well as you know Anthony I will be picking up a lava dome with Judy xc forks on no idea what condition but wont be on the kona anyway.

Was thinking I might use them on another bike but not found any spares.
So is the deal pretty much unless you can find old spares they are useless?....

Sorry if I misled you Tom. If it's any consolation, I bought a 96 Judy SL on the same basis, only to find that I was out of date!
 
Dont worry Anthony, as I said I had no intension keeping them on anyway. I will put them on here for spares or ebay or something, wheather they are working or not!
 
Judys are pretty easy to service. Check the instructions on the angry asian website.

First job is to check the bushes and stanchions for wear. If there is play between stanchions and legs or the stanchions are very worn I'd think twice...

Once you've stripped the forks give everything a good clean. Test the operation of the damping cartiridge - you'll be able to tell easily if there is fluid in it or not. If not the earlier carts (pre 96 iirc) are refillable. The carts often fail due to worn bushes - the play between fork legs and stanchions causes the damping cart shaft to move in the 'wrong' plane and therefore wreck seals or at least allow the fluid to p*ss out....

If everything is ok pop some springs in and consider getting crush washers on the lowers in order you can 'oil bath' the forks and you're good to go.
