has anyone heard of a "ballbearingised finish" ?!

Ball burnishing is where the metal is subject to impact with small usually stainless ball bearnigs over a period of time to anneal, harden, change the strength(whatever it is) the metal and give a strong durable finish.

I thought the process was done by tumbling the frame in a large vat of the copper balls....?

dont know, cant remember....not that bothered either!

Yup, tumbling is right. I know alloy wheels use a stainless ball. I think copper maybe too soft to create a good enough impact.
Hell, I don't really know. Just pass the stella over!
