just in wednesbury just over the road-ish from your works, you could drop by for a brew n all :D

Good spot. Amazes me how the number of decorative chrome platers has dwindled in the Midlands over the past decade. Used to be about three or four within a mile of my office seven or eight years ago. Only place now is somewhere in Cradley that only does hardened chrome for industrial use. Sorry, slightly O/T but vaugely relevant... I hope... :)

I always try to use local places unless there are big price/quality differences. Also smaller companys tend to give a s**t about your custom and are usually much friendlier and if its an old company have vast experience of tricky problems they have come across before. Would rather have old bob do it in his shed who's been doing the job for 3o+ years tha some multi million state of the art place thats been doing it for five mins.

I saw a SC chameleon on fleabay a few months back that had been chrome powder coated, looked very good. i've never heard of it before so he could of been speaking pooh!

Years ago i asked about replating a skyway ta, and it was stupid money.
The prep work for chrome has to be faultless, any imperfections will show straight through including any pitting from rust etc.

Good luck though!

Aerocoat in Norfolk do a chrome powdercoat. tis not cheap though.

the powder coat chrome that aerocoat do is good but you can see a mile off its not chrome on a bike frame good for car wheels and the like thought i know Adam and his son there. on another note if you do go down the chroming route make sure you get it chromed in surgical chrome nicer finish and will last a hell of a lot longer my dad has his norton commando frame done (as it was the feather bed frame) and it will last forever now not much in the price difference at cycle frame size.

Thanks for all the input its been quite an education.

Surgical chrome seems to be the way to go, in light of the fact I'm only looking to do this once.... mind you I probably won't be able to afford to do it twice anyway !

If my X1 frame was covered in rust spots I'd be less cautious, but its actually not that bad, but I want it to look amazing given its a very early 1995 model. And the querky (P7 cut n shut) design turns heads

I'll keep you all posted as to the outcome,

Thanks once again guys
