'Harriers verses Cyclists'

Retro Guru
Sorry folks, I think I'd put this in the wrong forum ('Yorkshire Area Groups'), perhaps it was better in the 'Rides & Races'

Sadly, the event is tomorrow now :oops:

Still, one or two of you may fancy it, if only to watch

As suggested by me at the end of This thread, how does anyone feel about having a go at taking on the Fell-Runners??

The date;
Saturday 19th November @ 14:00

The Location;
(adjacent to) Dowley Gap Lock
Leeds & Liverpool Canal

'Fishermans Inn' (race HQ, & nearest 'sat-nav' marker)
Waggon Lane
Bingley
BD16 1TS
O/S SE120385

'Entries On The Day' only
£5.00 - runners
£8.00 - cyclists (includes a 'BCF levy')

The Course?;
6 miles (not a lot really!!)
650 feet of ascent
(see the attached map, 'clockwise' around the loop)

Note the course record holder, who I guess a lot of you have heard of, & perhaps you may also know of the chap who finished 2nd in 2008??

2010 race review; http://www.mtbe.co.uk/post82478.html#82478

It's organised by (as the links suggest) 'Bingley Harriers', & 'Bradford RCC' - by their esteemed member; Mr John Rawnsley (yes!, the long time organiser of the 'Three Peaks Cyclo-Cross')

And, as someone said on the Bingley Harriers own forums.......
Quote
This has got to be the craziest race of the season.
Unless I was seeing things I saw a guy dressed as Spiderman on a cross bike with a broken saddle........
Pregnant ladies taking numbers at the finish and a start view covered in grass........
Only when tilting the head backwards could you see the way to go it was that steep!
A bit less muddy than last year in the start and finish fields, if my memory serves me right.

Nice to see so many supporters.
Nice to see that tree trunk as well....almost didn't!.....well placed marshall!!!!!

I especially enjoyed the spectator cheers as you cleared rocks at the campsite road on the way back....just before nearly breaking a leg in the gully just beyond.

Thanks to all the marshalls and the pub staff / landlord. 2 helpings of pie and peas and a pint reminded me why I'm not a good runner.
Cracking event!

In 2010, I was = 63rd/146 @ 47:08
(Runners = 41st/106)

Now.. do I run or ride it this year (if I run, I want to beat 45:00 this year)

Are there any forumites who are in the vicinity who might be willing to also give it a go??? (be it on bike, or on foot??)
Come on guys, be brave!!!

2010 event photos here; (you won't spot me in them though, as they missed me out!)

NB; There's a chance that there'll be some big names there;
Alistair & Jonathon Brownlee are both 'Bingley Harriers', so may show up, dependant on their schedule??

As may Rob Jebb, he of 'Three Peaks' fame

Chris Young (ex-National Champion) is another one who indulges, as are the Thackray brothers (Richard & Robert, the ex GB cross-squad/Pace Reasearch team riders)

Well Richard - any news??

Did you run or ride?

Did you finish?

Did you beat 45 mins? ;)

Hi Paul, how's things????

1. Run

2. No :evil:

3. No, due to #2

I ran it, & had caught Paul Milsom up, just on the climb up through the woods onto the top of Shipley Glen

I'd passed him (for perhaps 20 places?) & then got a branch at high velocity in the face
No-ones fault, just one of those things!!
It removed a contact lens, but felt more like it had taken the eye with it!

Driving home was.... interesting, one on lens & a partially closed, bloodshot eye :roll:

Now, I've got a severely scratched Cornea & lens-less until hte swelling/scratches go down for a proper assessment

I also missed 'Barnsley 10K' on the Sunday due to it too (wanted a '41:30' or better there)
Bugger!! :evil:

Result here, in the 'Harriers' forum;

Also.......
1.
Now I need to get (keep??) race-fit for the next fell-race now;
Sunday 18th December, at Haworth

Although it's only a short one @ 5miles/800 feet of ascent :D
http://woodentops.org.uk/index.php?topi ... topic=home

2. I also need to get a couple more long distance races under my belt, as I want to try & get an entry for the 'Three Peaks Fell-Race' next year
The longest I've done so far was 'HolmeMoss' last year @ 18 miles/4000feet of ascent!!

Edit; Wednesday @ 10:22

This is the 'H v C' course', should have added map before :oops:
I got twigged just below the 'P' of 'Shipley Glen'

Oops! Nasty little accident, hope it's getting better now. I had a similar thing happen in a 'cross in the 80's, ended up in Pinderfields having my eye stitched. Not nice looking at a needle going straight into the corner of your eye :shock:

See you in the park soon.

I got the 'All Clear' on Saturday afternoon, & they had suitable lenses in stock, but glasses will take 2 - 3 weeks to arrive (due to frame; Oakley! & prescription

I did manage to run the 'PECO' XC on Sunday, but suffered badly, after a week 'off the feet' :roll:
Couldn't see properly to go further than the bin, so was off work (& also no running/riding)

Ended up with a crap place of 129th/226 in the male class, there were also 146 ladies running the same race (separate results)

'We' organised/hosted it, down at Fitzwilliam on the 'Country Park'
http://www.pecoxc.co.uk/pages/race1.html

I think 20 Clubs were represented!

We have another 'Featherstone Road Club' rider join 'Ackworth'; a certain Rob Sproston...................who bet me at the 'XC' :x ;)
Then again, he did come past me & got away at the one pinch-point there was, through a hedgerow :roll:
