Happy 30th Birthday !

Re: Re:

I just realised that I forgot to put the 501 numerals next to the name ! it should read RIDGEBACK 501

You'll have to add the 501 later but £4.99 is a hell of a bargain and you've done a grand job – looks great, nice colour. Sweet.

Re:

I should explain that before building the wheels I had checked to see if I could fit on such a small frame

My preferred bike size is 30"/30" by this I mean crank c/line to top of saddle is 30" and top centre of saddle to bars c/line is 30" This bike
measured 25"/24"

The bike came with its original fluted alloy seatpost ( SR Laprade ) and Madison saddle. The saddle needed to be at least 5" higher
and the bars a similar amount further forward. A new seatpost solved the first problem, however the finished bike looks slightly unusual
in that extra long seatposts were not often seen on 1986 bikes

The additional height/reach required for the stem/bars proved more difficult. It seemed that the best/only solution might be a set of
Bull Moose bars. At this point I decided to proceed with the build hoping to locate some bars later

It took more than a year until I found a set of Nitto bars on eBay USA. The bars gave me the exact height/reach required for a perfect
fit, though I must admit that this was pure luck

The same eBay seller also had a pair of NOS Shimano SL-MT50 gear shifters of which more later

Re:

The Ridgeback 501 came well equipped for its price ( about £ 380 ) in 1986

The cantilever brakes, four finger brake levers and large flange hubs all came from the then top of the range ( for Shimano )
Deore/XT/Deer head groupset 'Built to withstand the demands of off road riding and the rigors of touring' as it said at the time

The only compromise was in the drivetrain. Here the lesser AL-11 series components were used, presumably to save money.
So we have an FD-AL11 and RD-AL11 (front and rear mechs) operated by SL-MT50 shifters

All these items were present when bought, though the LH shifter was partly missing. I was tempted to upgrade the cheaper bits
to XT, which would have been easier, however I decided to stick to the original spec because both the mechs cleaned up quite well.
The shifters were another matter as they were inherently quite flimsy, and it took a long time to find some NOS examples

The new bars and shifters made the brake levers look really shabby, so I could not turn down the chance of an NOS pair on eBay
( this time from Norway )

The photo shows the front mech area in some detail. The FAG bottom bracket , chainrings and cranks that came with the bike
are visible with some Suntour 'bear traps' as an upgrade from the plastic pedals it came with

If you look closely at the chain stay, just in line with the rim, you can see a faint line. This is a paint protector made from three layers of
self adhesive clear plastic ( Fablon ) you join three layers together and then cut to a suitable shape, warm up slightly and apply to
the stay. I use a single layer on the lower side of the down tube to protect from stone chips

Re:

This is the bike as bought

It looks like it came from the same field as yours James

The extra high and short reach stem gave a very upright riding position much like a Cleland ! I had to replace it so that I could
ride it and also bring the bike nearer to its original spec

The headset was the only major item that was discarded, apart from the rims

The Madison saddle was in quite good condition when cleaned but was changed for a more comfortable one

Haha! Yes, your does look in similar state to mine! You've done an amazing job it has to be said - well done. If I can get halfway close then I'll be happy. I do like the blue you have used though - is that a RAL colour?

I found someone else on here with mine: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=311662 and it contains a bit more about the spec. I think i'll have trouble finding the original front triple though (Tracer crankset).

Re:

The paint colour is Merckx Blue ( metallic ) No.72 in the Argos Cycles paint colour chart. Though it was not painted at Argos

The metallic paint finish comes to life in bright sunlight, none of the photos really show this

I am sure you will locate a Tracer crankset, try advertising on here. Don't forget it took me over a year to find some bars !

This last photo shows the new alloy Specialized headset in some detail. It replaced the very rusty chromed steel one, and brake hanger
on the original

I like the brazed on cable guides either side of the head tube, its a nice detail and not only stops the gear cables from wearing the paint
but also makes the cable runs from the shifters neater. The cables are in fact on the 'wrong' side and cross over under the down tube

The TIG welding is particularly neat

Re:

Having decided on a fairly accurate period correct restoration, the question of what colour to finish the frame followed

Luckily I have a copy of an advert of the time, it reads :

"CUSTOM COLOUR for an extra £5 you can specify the colour of your Ridgeback 501 frame.
Please submit a sample of your colour choice"

So I was free to choose any colour I wanted !

Bearing in mind that this was not a 'high end' bike, I am surprised that this option was available. I can remember seeing Overburys
frames in custom colour schemes at a paint finishers ( A1 Coatings ) that I used to deal with in the mid 80's. There was of course
a considerable difference in price and you would expect a fancy finish to go with a fancy price. The painters premises, in an old
station, were about 1/2 mile from Overburys shop
