I just ride on crack.

If the MOT tester allows cracks in car tires it doesn't really matter on old mtb but I wouldn't on road bikes.

Sidewalls are fun but unless you are going to go really fast any where or running 100psi +

Cracked rubber does not bother me but a damaged tyre carcass does. The woven nylon tyre carcass is what holds the inner tube and tyre pressure in check. If rubber was all that was in the tyre it would stretch like a balloon and would definitely fail if cracked but thanks to the carcass the rubber is for grip, shock absorption, tube protection and water tightness.
So cracked tyre might fail on waterproofness and reduce the shock absorption and inner tube protection might be reduced but a blowout would be unlikely unless a sharp thing pierces it.

Plus with cost of tyres these days I need to get my monies worth. I will not be stupid however and will keep checking tyres condition. A tyre where the rubber crumbles in my hand will not be used regardless of how intact the carcass.

My 1996 Velociraptor front tyre was cracked. What bothered me was that the tube was about to burst out of the sidewall. Funnily enough the rear looks fine so hasn’t been replaced. The brake blocks on my Proflex Attack LE also look original but who cares? Braking is highly over rated.

I would ride a tire with cracks but not one with damaged casing or knobs that are starting to tear off.

I used to, well old tyres in general, but found I was getting a lot of punctures which was annoying especially when cycling to work etc.

So for bikes I’m riding regularly I try to fit the best I have or by some new ones and keep on top of them.

Consequently, like post of you I suspect, I have a pile of old rubber in the garage that I’m not sure what to do with!

not much but some. However, not always clear when on bike as to how bad it is. Decided to save my old set of road tyres, Specialised Nimbus from 1993, first pic on bike (taken few years back) looked ok but on closer inspection having removed them...

they are useful for protecting the rims of wheels not being used
