Hi 64 split rat def not a Zaskar Did you buy it from a bloke in Coventry by any chance ?

na it came from a mate, he and i didnt realize but not bothered. seam to of started something on here tho. All i wanted was to sell it as it has been in my loft for a couple of years and im not going to use it as i rebuilt my talara. I do have some knowlage of bikes and yes this was an honest mistake for all the nay sayers.Is there any way of telling from the frame no?

Do a thread asking on the general part of the board. There are a few GT experts (real ones) on here.

seatpost size and bottom bracket width , will go some way to i.d. ing it
but looks like it could be a generic GT frame
if so it will be a 26.8 post and a 68mm shell width
the mech hanger dates it 94 onward (i think)

GM1234321 will probably be able to be a lot more specific than me tho

Highly unlikely. I've never seen painted mid 90's Avalanche. They were all polished alu. My closest bet is Pantera in that colour. Maybe. Or maybe not.

The Zaskar seatpost is 27.2 and if i remember correctly, the bb shell is 68, that was the late 90's anyway.

Just the basic usual t'internet stuff mate, your/you're. (i remind myself by saying 'you are = you're' 'your=yours i.e. belonging')

Have you ever owned a Zaskar? the aluminium ones are brutal imho, a pure pure racing chasis imesho. I doubt many modern frames can match their stiffness even now.

Agree. No need for it really. The seller sounds like he genuinely thought it was a Zaskar, and bought it as one.

Just because most Retrobikers can tell a Zaskar a mile off, doesn't mean that everyone can and some of the members who make smartar*e comments would do well to take note of this.

I didn't know how to tell a Zaskar apart when I first joined the forum (however, I quickly learned), so the seller isn't the only one.

I'll remember that, it'll come in handy. Luckily I'm old enough not to really care what people say on Internet forums, stick and stones and all.

As for owning a Zaskar, yup, use to race one back in the late 90's while I was doing the SAMS and the National Points events. Very solid frame as you say, wish I'd used one at the Malvern's, that event was a frame killer!

I stand corrected then. Never seen painted Aval. here before.

All Zaskars up to about 199 something were ball burnished or anodised. I think its after 1997 they got painted - I had a blue one.

Original Zaskars have a 'block' cable stop under the frame and a titanium guide riveted to the frame just under the triangle for the rear brake cable.

The welding is much thicker than Taiwanese frames with a more 'hand made' look to it.

The seat tube is split at the front and the OEM seatclamp was anodised black with a Ti bolt.

Those substantial rear drop-outs were not machined until later models after about 1995 ish either. Alway 6061 stamped somewhere and a serial number - if it hasnt been ground off!
