GT Zaskar 1991 original

Retro Newbie
Hi, I have owned this awesome GT Zaskar since new and its mostly an original bike and I still have heaps of other original parts sitting some where in my shed.

Please ignore the frame stickers as they were an after thought as original sets were hard to find 12+ years ago.

This is the only photo that I have on my laptop and as I work thousands of miles away from home I don't have the frame serial number to post, YET, But will be able to soon when I actually get home.

She has, Tioga revolver splined cranks, Chris King tapered bearing head set, Scott rolling cam front brakes, U-brake on rears Flite titanium seat, Answer H-bars, Onza bar ends, MAG21 forks, all XT original group set, 6061 heat treated 16 inch frame.
In the shed is, Original ridged triple mount front forks, 3 x rear de-railer drop outs, 2 x centre frame cable guides, Original head set, Alloy I think and other dusty shit I cant remember.

Question, is there a list of frame numbers to identify the actual model/country of origin/year of manufacturer, that I can reference too.

Cheers Spankmonkey

Hi there.

Welcome

Lovely bike, Tioga cranks especially look the job. 8)

The first four digits in the frame number will give month then year of manufacture. All Zaskars were hand made in the US up until the late 90's so yours is definitely going to be an American frame. It won't have a replaceable mech hanger though, the first Zaskars didn't have them, so not sure what you have in the garage

oh, and you can get the correct decals on ebay, or contact user gil_m on here, he can usually help.

Sweet!

I've got a '94 Zaskar (http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewto ... p;t=286783).

As has been mentioned in the post above, the serial number is stamped on the inside of the rear dropout, and the frame size is usually stamped on the outside of the same dropout (see the photos of my frame for reference).

The first four digits of the serial number are the month and year of manufacture. Mine are "0194" which indicate that my frame was produced in January 1994.

Hope this helps :D

Hi Cherrybomb, thanks for the quick reply.

I'm a bit hazy on the year I bought her, I know it was in the very early 90's. I raced a few bikes before this Zaskar, I owned a Kojima ?? (heavy boat anchor bike)GT 18' karakorum and Avalanche until I fell in love with the Zaskar. Yea, there is a rear drop out so it maybe 1992-93 I'm guessing.

I raced this bike all over Australia and New Zealand from 1990 to 1996, and rode it across the Nullarbor in 1993 and toured the North island of New Zealand in 1995.She never let me down even after being run over twice by lunatics.

I'm now only just starting to look at restoring her to the former awesome bike that she once was, it changed my life. So I think I will be looking around for parts soon.

I had to add this pic, Its a mates first Downhill race in the early 90's, umm hence the dork helmet and ridged forks, Kiwi Jim was trying to hard that day and actually managed to put the bike in front of the rider.Ha ha ha

Thanks Barnyballbags for the info, I just returned home and went straight to the shed, had to know, its been bugging me. And the answer is Da da dah darrr 06910894. Anyone know how many of the year were produced?

There was no drop out on the frame, it was a solid frame mount for the rear de-railer, I may have been thinking of my old RTS1 / RTS3 that I owned aeons ago.

June 91 then, nice early frame. 8)

Didn't think it had a removable hanger

If you do have any in the shed, there'a a guy who is after one knocking around. He asks every time a frame or bike comes up for sale if the seller will sell it separately :D

He might be interested in buying one off you.....maybe :?:
