I'd keep it as original as possible, but it's your bike so you do with it as you like. BMX bars are cool though, but it can be tricky sourcing a nice set of bars and stem to fit as it has a 1 1/8" steerer, not 1"
Most BMX quill stems are 1" (22.2mm)
Alternatively you can get a quill to ahead stem adapter and a ahead type BMX stem to fit BMX bars. There's plenty of people who have done this adapter conversion.
As for the bars, this Fairedale MX4 is a nice one, not too high but could make for a nice riding position.

It seems a shame to lose the painted stem when the main attraction is that paint scheme.
