Pardon my possible ignorance, but was the Lightning a European or British model that wasn't in the U.S.? I recall a lot of models offered in the States (where I've always been), but never heard of the Lightning until lurking then joining retrobike.

Yours and mine too. I'm afraid I don't know where it was made available. I believe it was made because they couldn't get more of the Xizang's.

It was made because gt wanted another titanium frame bike in the line up.

Made for 2 yrs mid 90’s it was sold as a full bike with stx group and a rockshox fork.

The frame was made in Asia where as the Xizang was made in the USA, and a polished finish, and Xizangs were made till 2000 I think.
