OK I stand corrected it is a genuine GT.

I could only find this, another 88 24" wheel cruiser.

I just got one of these from a mate. It's like the first picture with the weird barcode stripes by the logo. 20" wheels. 6-Speeds. Though I haven't been able to get the derailer to switch to the larger crank sprocket.
Thanks for posting these. Been trying to find model year and where they hid the serial # at.

GT do make BSO's, I remember seeing a very bottom range GT mtb with high tensile steel frame, flat plate dropouts and other tell tale signs of rubbishness. Usualy they keep the Taiwan cheap cr** for the US catalogue bike market where it competes with Huffy and low end Schwinn.
