Well picked up a genuine 100% original backwoods last week in polished alloy, given it some elbow grease and it is looking sweet.

The bike has had very very little use, the tyres are original and like new etc.

Gonna keep it reletavely standard and keep all old parts but thinking red bits on it with slicks and maybe a fixie front?

Anyway my 1st question is i want some riser bars, where is best to get some simple mid/high risers for a gt backwoods? Will it have standard size bars or oversize?

Cheers

Welcome!

eBay is probably your best bet, depending on budget - you'll be after 25.4mm bars if you've got the original standard black GT stem. The modern (oversize) standard is 31.8mm.

Something like this simple GT riser wouldn't be out of place, even back then: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/GT-MTB-HANDLEBARS ... 0810833470

well so far so good, got the gt riser bars, red pedals delivered. Ordered some retro red DX V brakes and levers, got some 7 speed retro rapid fires on order.

Need to work out whether the headset is threaded or not then a new stem is needed to help with the geometry...

Anyone know if the headset is threaded and what i'd need to replace the stem?

Thanks

yeah i think it is an ahead set, threadless 1 1/8....

Does that mean i can get any stem to fit it?

Cheers

Yeah any 1 1/8th ahead stem (which is most stems).

If you are keeping the original bars then you will need to make sure it is standard size clamp (25.4mm) not 31.8 (modern) as modern bars are "oversize" and therefore the stems are different.

I'd put a nice Kore stem on it if I were you.
