Gripshift - are they all the same?

I was looking through a 94 magazine the other day and was quite suprised to find that the SRT 800 grip shift cost as much if not a little bit more that XT shifters, and far more than XT thumbies, as i thought gripshift was in part popular becuase it was cheap which it seems wasnt the case

XT was second in the range, compare to XTR or price against SRT600
Thumbies are poor alternatives so GS's should cost more ;)

First thing I bought for my modern bike was some replacement X0 shifters for the X9 gripshifters that came with it. I have never got on with them in all my years!
