Grinding sound when pedalling

Just put a new bike together and on its shakedown ride it sounds like the chain is grinding on something - its not the sound it makes when it rubs against the front mech though.

When I pop a wheelie or put pressure on the the chain jumps so I am assuming chain although its nearly new and didnt have any issues on the bike it came off - any ideas anyone or is it new chain time?

Check that the rear mech is sitting below the cassette and the jockeys are not touching the cassette.
Also check the chain is not scuffing the rear mech cage.

I'm having some chain issues (what make) is yours the correct chain IG or HG or SRAM?? This may cause some grinding as chain widths vary?!? I find www.sheldonbrown.com helps with some tech stuff!! Just saying

Chain alignment through whole drivetrain, mechs rubbing, dry or/and gritty chain?.....take it off, put in a plastic bottle and 1" of turps, shake till arm hurts, repeat two or three times and then lube up well....(chain, not you!)......is freehub dry?....bottom bracket dry?....mech jockeys ok?...all worth a thought....
