Re:

Morning chaps,

I'm about to join this band of ne'er-do-wells by SS'ing my P7 :D

Gathering all the bits together at the moment and just taken delivery of a Surly Singleator - I'll be initially running a 32:16 combo so would it be better for it to be in push up or push down mode?

Also, don't know whether this matters but my P7 has a E-type front mech and as this is going will I need a "normal" BB rather than my current one which obviously accommodates the FM?

I'll be using my m737 cranks (compact 5 bolt 94bcd) and can only find a 32t Surly chainring which will fit - any other ones available in this size other than surly?

Thanks
Matty :D

I run a 1 x 1 and a Pugsley for years but originally on my Stumpjumper I ran the singulator with it pushing up as it gives a bit more chain contact on the rear cog and especially with the 32/16, which is what I run as well. I think it comes with the push down spring from memory so you might have to buy the push up spring. They work great and I use one on my Big Dummy which runs and Alfine 8. They are pretty tough bits of kit and I still have my original one from back in 2008/2009.
I think you can just take the front mech off and tighten the BB or fit a washer the same width. As long as you line the chain with the rear your fine.
I still run an old 5 bolt LX ctrank on my 1 x 1 and chain rings are a pain as there isn't much about. I have used middleburn and Surly. The Surly is stainless and lasts forever so while it is expensive, it will even out over time. I have found the middleburn getting harder and harder to find these days.
Hope this helps and look forward to seeing your P7, will make a great SS'er for sure.

Re:

Thanks Jamie- some great help there.

Singleator came with both springs and tool and is currently in push up mode.

Daft Q: being compact, is a 32/16t on a 94bcd just the same as a 32/16 on a 110bcd?

The 32 16 is the same on both.
Good your singulator came with both as I had to buy a push up spring for mine.

Re:

You could just leave the front mech on there and adjust the high/low screws to keep it clear of the chain..
Or take it off altogether, you'll probably have room to wind the BB in a few threads so it's flush with the frame.
Think a push "up" tensioner is supposed to be "better", but I never noticed any difference tbh.

A push up on a small cog like a sixteen will just give the links a bit more contact.

More contact between chain and cog is always better than less if you like your 'nads where they are!
