Devout Dirtbag
Hi Guys,
Bit late for a classic in this section but I`m pretty sure there are some other forum members how have posted here about Giant TCR`s.

On the list of +1`s I have was a genuine ONCE Team bike - not because of the riders or the team, but that black and yellow thing just lloks awesome and I do love a team bike. There are, of course, thousands upon thousands of ex team bikes out there, all genuine.... really....

So this frame came up last year on ebay and I ummed and ahhed, then it went off the listings, came back a few weeks ago and went for it, a deal was done.

Its an ex ONCE team bike TT configuration (I believe the same frame were used for both road and TT?), meant to be from the 04/05 season, repainted in Liberty Seguros colours (ONCE became Liberty Seguros in `05 before becoming the current Moviestar). Apparently BH supplied the road bikes but had no TT bikes, so the ONCE frames were repainted. Looking at the paint, its a real pro job, logo`s are masked and sprayed as opposed to decals, there is, however, the odd bit of yellow popping through a few stone chips, plus original ONCE stickers on the seat tube.

Questions - were these frames originally anodised (being ally) or painted?
- Also, thought that from `04 TCR`s were carbon - this ones definatly ally with carbon fork, so would make it `03?

Plan is to strip all that lovely paint off, then go for either the all yellow configuration or the black/yellow - not sure which yet. Have a full campy 10 speed TT set up to go there along with some head tri spokes (almost went for period correct mavic g3 but they really don`t have a braking surface and I don`t want to die...).

Thoughts please, Dan.

Re:

Not yet - basically stripped down to components, chatted with Gridno on the forum regarding finish and decals - looks like a challenging paintjob ahead - anodising is a non starter due to the zing of the yellow - going for 2002 Beloki TT bike as a reference as I really like the full on yellow...

Will look good , will you paint it yourself or have a specialist paint it for you ?

I`ll do that one inhouse - just finished the `53 Torpado thats on the forum, did the paint on that one myself as well - usually use professional painters but they shy away from complicated details like swooshy lines - avaliable decals are limited but the TCR also has complicated detail around the headset and forks.

Cheers, Dan.

I’ll search that one out. Your frame appears to have some small filets that I’ve never seen before , possibly to add strength for the Pro Teams ?

Your correct - there are some ally fillets on several junctions - I`ll get some close up pics on here tommorow - thought I hadn`t seen them before but figured ther`d been a lot of TCR`s...

Thanks, Dan.

Very cool find. I thought the fillets didn't look standard too. If you're going to paint it again, is it worth sanding back the existing paint to see if the full- doping-spec yellow paint is still underneath?

What wheels did the pro teams use on these in road trim? Does this bike post-date the Mike Burrows TCR wheels with the chunky spokes?

Pics of the filets on the frame:

Additional filets around the top tube/seatube area and leading down seatstays: ***weird image orientation, no idea why***

Additional filets around the bottom bracket: ***weird image orientation, no idea why***

Sneaky bit of bright yellow peaking out on the forks:

Parts so far are re-use original saddle (selle Italia TT - looks original to the frame), re-use the bars, new consumables, Campy 10 speed super record TT set up already to go, Hed tri spoke TT wheels with veloflex tubs also ready to go - just the hard work of restoring the frame first...

Thanks, Dan.

I think you have an interesting detective job on the frame , wonder if the fillets were factory fitted or done later ?
