Giant Halfway

Someone local is selling one but singlespeed. He says no place to bolt on a derailleur. How difficult would it be to covert to gears? Colin

Iirc halfway has a "single Sided swingarm" i.e. no stays on the non drive side.
This usual means a stub axle, so a custom hub.
Chain tensioning on the singlespeed is an eccentric sleeve for the axle mount. more non- standard shenanigans.

As Giant did a derailleur equipped version, it should be possible to get the parts to convert to geared, but it would be a lot easier (quicker and cheaper) to just get the right bike in the first place.

Unless you want a challenge.

I totally agree with what you said
There must be a lot of Halfway. In Spain, many were sold in the first decade of the 2000s, which is very curious since we did not have a tradition of bicycles for urban travel. It also cost more than €700 if I remember correctly, which for a bicycle that is going to be used sporadically was a lot.
Even so, it was a success, I suppose that its simplicity when folding (even the pedals, a nice detail), its fluid lines with a successful aesthetic and the memory in the Spanish of the 500 folding BH with just a little lever in our youth made them sell very well here
So I imagine finding a suitable one with changes will be easier and cheaper than getting into trouble.
P.S. I was left wanting to buy one in 2006. One day I will look for one for myself.
