Giant ATX Series

Hi. I have just been offered a Giant ATX 800 at "mates rates". ATX bikes can still be seen occasionally on the trails around Melbourne so I figure they are a solid ride for XC riding. I have Googled the ATX 800 but with very few hits. I did find what looks like the frameset on the Giant archive - it's a 1999 in "team" colours. The bike I have been offered has orange Bombers on it.

My question is how does the ATX series work for Giant bikes - is lower or higher better and, more specifically, where does the 800 fit in?

Thanks in advance.

Mark.

I take it the colour you mean is purple front (about 6-8") and the rest yellow (see pic below)?

Back in 2000 the ATX 800 retailed for around £300 here in the UK so it would be classified as an entry level bike. These days the ATX range starts at around £500-ish. At one time the ATXs were rear suspension frames too.

Thanks for the quick response - do you know if the actual frame changes throughout the range ie: is it just components that bumps you up the range?

Regards, Mark.

Not sure about the older ones but the newer ones use the same frame throughout the range. Until you get to the alliance and carbon versions that is.

Oh. One more thing. Does that mean that the 800 would be bottom of the line and 860/870 etc at the top? Or isn't it that simple?

Regards, Mark.

I had a ATX 880 (with deore and xt) from that era and that was the top of the line ATX aluminum. The 800 was the cheaper teamreplica. The series went up from 800 till 880 and then the crabon series.

Had lots of fun with the Giant and it survived allmost 5 of my mountainbiking years. Was a very nice rider.

I have the 97/98 catalogue at home (with pages scanned and on the computer) I'll stick the ATX page up when I get home so you can see what's what.

I had this ATX890 in 97 when I rode for Giant, it had the CU92 aluminium frame which I believe was lighter than the MCM frame at the time. It was a great ride and in fact still is !
