gear jumping

Lube the chain if you haven't already and check for stiff links.

Then check the inner cable moves without snagging. I recent had a very similar problem on my '99 East Peak, changing gears on the bike stand was fine, but when putting the power on, the chain skipped all over the cassette.

I removed and cleaned everything, still no joy, so I replaced the Gear Cable, and that solved it.

Sometimes it can be as simple as the inner cable snagging on the end of the outer cable, or the outer being bunged-up with grease/dirt.

I had this problem and eventually worked out it was the derailleur spring being weak. Put a new derailleur on and see what it is like!

aaarrrhhh, the damn chain splitter is stuck on the chain, allen key stripped, all the above has been checked, why me  ,looks like a trip to the local bike shop and a hacksaw job on the splitter,no bike for the weekend  .

If the chain is skipping over cogs then it could be the cassette/chainrings (depending on here it is jumping), a stiff link in the chain.

If it is trying to jump up or down a gear them it is a cable tension issue most likely or snagged cable somehow.

...mate I feel your pain with the chain splitter! Happened to me, is not a "good" chain spitter on the market?

Had similar issues with jumping gears but only when on front large chainring and smallest ring on cassette, after a few hours of lengthening chain, shortening chain, different rear mech, etc etc I was still stumped, I must add at this point I had fitted a new chain to my bike, after speaking to 'Mrgrumpy' over at Pauls Cycles in Dereham whilst sorting some bits out he pointed out it may be worn rear teeth on the cassette, but as the smallest has only a minimal amount of teeth, when pressure (Torque) in this case causes it to slip and jump. New Cassette fitted and now my Gear Shifting is as slick as Hiltlers Fringe. Whilst this may be obvious to some retrobikers, visually the teeth looked ok, but once off the bike and up close you could see the profile had changed on the teeth causing the problem.

Just thought I'd put this in the mix, may even help someone out :)

Jussa :)
