Retro Newbie
Hi am about to restore the above bike, following details suggest it is a bit unusual, high end Gazelle model from 82-86
Gazelle Sport Solide (S/N 6503692)
Frame: Lugged steel, brazed, 1980s Dutch utility
Wheels: Weinmann Inox 18/10 Nr 811, 28" (ISO 622 mm), single-wall stainless, 22 mm width
Wheel Engraving: "WEINMANN MADE IN BELGIUM 700 C-ERTRO 622 X 22 DIN" (both wheels)
Wheel Print: Red "Nr 811 WEINMANN INOX 18/10" (both wheels)
Front Hub: Gazelle drum brake (likely 70 mm)
Rear Hub: Sturmey-Archer 3-speed with drum brake (or coaster)
Brakes: Rod-linked, one-hand, front/rear drums, smooth “finest” condition
Gears: SA 3-speed hub, shifts well
Dynamo: Basta (likely bottle, 6V, 3W), powers front headlight (old bulb, 25–30 lumens)
Extras: Fast Rider double canvas pannier (20–30L, good condition), Gazelle tire pump, spare slim seat, rotary bell (50–70 mm, chrome/steel, engraved "J. Dorten Vries" on chime cover, two weights, multi-ring "ding-ding-ding"), mudguards (good, rear with "J. Dorten Vries" logo, "Nw. Rijksweg 16 'Phone icon' 127," penny farthing image)
Condition: Poor cosmetics (flaking paint, rust), functional (gears, brakes, dynamo), tires shot, tubes maybe OK (spares avail.), back light broken (plastic holder cracked, bulb intact)
Origin: Gazelle, Dieren, Netherlands, 1982–1986; dealer "J. Dorten Vries," Nieuwe Rijksweg 16 (likely Friesland/Gelderland), 1970s–1980s; wheels Weinmann, Belgium, 1980s
Any info/knowledge to add would be great, thanks.
